Cameroon Grapples with Escalating Tree Cover Loss and Recent Fire Incident

Cameroon has witnessed a significant escalation in tree cover loss over the past two decades, with the latest incident being a fire alert in the Centre Region. The country, which boasts an area of over 46 million hectares, has a tree cover extent of approximately 31.50 million hectares. However, the stability of this vital ecosystem is under threat, as data indicates a net loss in tree cover of around 625,839 hectares, marking a 1.71% decrease.

The predominant driver of tree cover loss has been shifting agriculture, contributing to a substantial portion of the deforestation. Urbanization, though less impactful than agriculture, has also played a role in the reduction of tree cover. The absence of wildfires as a major driver in recent years is notable, yet even a single fire incident, like the one recorded in February 2025, raises concerns about the vulnerability of Cameroon's forests to various disturbances.

The trend over the years has been alarming, with the highest annual loss recorded in 2014, at over 181,851 hectares. While there have been fluctuations, the overall trajectory points to a persistent challenge in preserving Cameroon's forested areas. This ongoing loss of tree cover not only impacts the local ecosystems and biodiversity but also has broader implications for climate change, given the role of forests in carbon sequestration.

As the international community continues to grapple with environmental sustainability, the situation in Cameroon serves as a reminder of the urgent need for concerted efforts to protect and restore forest landscapes for the benefit of current and future generations.
