Sudan's South Kordofan Region Registers Single Fire Incident Amidst Ongoing Tree Cover Challenges

In a recent update, Sudan's South Kordofan region reported a fire incident, underscoring the environmental challenges the country faces. Over the years, Sudan has experienced significant fluctuations in tree cover loss, primarily due to shifting agriculture. The country, with an area of over 187 million hectares, has a tree cover extent of approximately 72,712 hectares.

Analysis of historical data reveals that shifting agriculture has been the predominant driver of tree cover loss, with incidents of wildfires also contributing to the decline. Notably, in 2021, shifting agriculture accounted for a loss of over 20 hectares, marking a consistent threat to the region's forestry.

Despite these losses, Sudan has seen a net gain in tree cover over the years. The net change in tree cover indicates a stable area of over 3.70 million hectares, with a net gain of approximately 131,288 hectares. This represents a positive change of 3.45%, reflecting efforts to recover and increase tree cover.

The latest fire incident, though isolated, serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance and sustainable land management practices to protect and enhance Sudan's natural environment.
