Sudan Confronts Environmental Challenge with Single Fire Incident in South Kordofan

Sudan has recently faced an environmental challenge marked by a fire incident in the South Kordofan region. This incident underscores the broader issue of tree cover loss that the country has been grappling with over the years. Analysis of historical data reveals that Sudan has experienced a net change in tree cover characterized by a 3.45% increase, despite a total loss of 85,308.98 hectares.

The predominant driver of tree cover loss in Sudan has been shifting agriculture, which alone accounted for a significant portion of the loss. Notably, in 2023, shifting agriculture was responsible for over 89% of the tree cover loss, with wildfires contributing to the emissions significantly, despite no recorded loss in tree cover from fires that year.

Explore country profile

The country's tree cover extent stands at 72,712.56 hectares, which is a minuscule fraction of its total land area of over 187 million hectares. While there has been a gain of 216,597.75 hectares in tree cover, disturbances have also been recorded, indicating ongoing environmental fluctuations.

The latest fire alert, although isolated, is a reminder of the persistent threat of wildfires in the region. It also highlights the need for continued monitoring and proactive measures to mitigate the impact of such incidents on Sudan's environment and its tree cover.
