Ghana has faced significant challenges in maintaining its tree cover, with a net loss of 572,797 hectares over the years, marking a 5.09% decrease in tree cover. The latest incident reported on January 11, 2025, was a fire in the Ashanti Region, contributing to the ongoing issue of tree cover loss in the country. Shifting agriculture remains the predominant driver, responsible for the vast majority of tree cover loss, followed by urbanization, which has also played a substantial role. Wildfires and forestry activities have contributed to a lesser extent but continue to impact the overall tree cover. The cumulative effect of these drivers has not only reduced the tree cover but also resulted in significant carbon emissions, further emphasizing the need for sustainable land management practices in Ghana.
