Ghana Grapples with Tree Cover Loss Amid Latest Fire Incident in Northern Region

Ghana has experienced a significant tree cover loss over the past two decades, with the latest incident being a fire alert in the Northern Region as of December 31, 2024. The country's tree cover extent spans approximately 6,955,668 hectares, which is a critical component of its 23,832,413-hectare land area. Analysis of historical data reveals a worrying trend of tree cover loss primarily driven by shifting agriculture, contributing to the majority of the recorded loss. Urbanization, although a smaller factor, also plays a role in this decline.

Over the years, the total tree cover loss has been substantial, with the highest recorded loss in 2018, amounting to over 151,000 hectares. The cumulative effect of these losses has resulted in a net negative change in tree cover, with a 5.09% decrease from the stable tree cover recorded. Despite some gains in tree cover, the losses have outpaced these improvements, leading to a net loss of approximately 572,797 hectares.

The environmental impact of this tree cover loss is significant, with gross emissions of CO2 equivalent reaching alarming levels. For instance, in 2022, the total gross emissions were nearly 78.67 million megagrams, underscoring the urgency of addressing this issue.

The latest fire incident, though isolated, is a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges Ghana faces in preserving its natural landscapes. With shifting agriculture as the predominant driver of tree cover loss, there is a clear need for sustainable practices that balance agricultural productivity with environmental conservation.
