Cameroon Confronts Escalating Tree Cover Loss and Environmental Impact
Cameroon Confronts Escalating Tree Cover Loss and Environmental Impact

In a concerning environmental development, Cameroon has experienced a significant tree cover loss over the past two decades, with shifting agriculture being the predominant driver. Analysis of historical data reveals a consistent pattern of deforestation, with an alarming peak in 2014 when the country lost approximately 181,851 hectares of tree cover. This figure represents the highest annual loss within the recorded period, with shifting agriculture accounting for a staggering 97% of this loss.

The cumulative effect of these losses has been profound. Cameroon's tree cover extent, which stands at over 31 million hectares, has seen a net change in tree cover characterized by a loss of nearly 977,000 hectares, while gains were modest at around 351,000 hectares. The net loss of approximately 626,000 hectares represents a 1.71% decrease in tree cover, a significant environmental setback for the country.

The latest incident data from the North Region of Cameroon, dated December 13, 2024, indicates a fire alert, adding to the series of challenges facing the country's forests. While the number of incidents is currently low, with only one reported fire, the potential for escalation remains a concern, particularly in the context of the broader trends of tree cover loss.

The environmental implications of these trends are substantial. The loss of tree cover not only affects biodiversity and ecosystems but also has broader impacts on climate regulation and the livelihoods of local communities. As Cameroon grapples with these environmental challenges, the focus on sustainable land management and conservation efforts becomes increasingly critical.
