Ethiopia Confronts Escalating Tree Cover Loss and Rising Wildfire Incidents

Ethiopia is facing a significant challenge with an escalating loss of tree cover and an increase in wildfire incidents. Over the past two decades, the country has seen a net loss of 738,330.73 hectares of tree cover, which is a 3.61% decrease from its original extent. This loss is primarily driven by shifting agriculture, accounting for the vast majority of the tree cover loss. Urbanization, although less significant, also contributes to this decline.

The data indicates a worrying trend, with the total tree cover loss in 2023 reaching 36,262.92 hectares, a stark increase from previous years. This has resulted in substantial CO2 emissions, further exacerbating the environmental impact. Wildfires, while not the leading cause, have been persistent, with the latest incident reported in Gambella, Ethiopia, as of January 2025.

The loss of tree cover not only impacts the environment but also the biodiversity and the livelihoods of local communities dependent on these ecosystems. The increasing frequency of wildfires adds to the urgency of addressing this environmental concern. As Ethiopia continues to lose its tree cover, the need for sustainable land management practices becomes more apparent to mitigate these losses and preserve the country's natural heritage.
