Madagascar has been grappling with significant environmental challenges, as recent data indicates a troubling trend in tree cover loss and fire incidents. Over the past two decades, the island nation has experienced a net decrease in tree cover of approximately 5.89%, with a total loss of over 1.19 million hectares. The primary driver of this deforestation has been shifting agriculture, which accounts for the vast majority of tree cover loss.
In 2022 alone, shifting agriculture led to the loss of nearly 248,558 hectares, contributing to a substantial increase in carbon emissions. Forestry activities and wildfires have also played a role, though to a lesser extent. The latest incident from November 2024 highlights the ongoing struggle, with a fire alert reported in the Alaotra-Mangoro region of Madagascar.
