Turkey's Forests Under Threat: A Comprehensive Analysis of Tree Cover Trends
Turkey's Forests Under Threat: A Comprehensive Analysis of Tree Cover Trends

Turkey's vast landscapes have experienced significant fluctuations in tree cover over the past two decades. With an area spanning over 78 million hectares, the nation's forests have faced a net change in tree cover that reflects both losses and gains. Notably, the overall tree cover extent is over 10 million hectares, which has seen a net increase of approximately 0.65%.

However, the country has not been immune to challenges. The latest incident in Aydın, Turkey, with a single fire alert, is a stark reminder of the ongoing threats to Turkey's natural habitats. While the data for 2022 shows a substantial tree cover loss of over 53,000 hectares, it is part of a broader trend observed since the early 2000s. The drivers of these losses have predominantly been attributed to forestry activities, which accounted for the largest portion of tree cover loss, followed by shifting agriculture.

The impact of these activities is evident in the carbon footprint, with millions of metric tons of CO2 equivalent emissions associated with tree cover loss. Urbanization also plays a role, albeit to a lesser extent, contributing to the changing landscape of Turkey's forests.

Despite these challenges, there have been positive signs as well. The data indicates a net gain in tree cover over the years, suggesting efforts towards reforestation and natural regeneration are having an impact. This delicate balance between loss and gain is a critical aspect of Turkey's environmental stewardship and highlights the importance of continued vigilance and action to protect and restore these vital ecosystems.
