Mozambique Grapples with Escalating Tree Cover Loss and Recent Fire Incident
Mozambique Grapples with Escalating Tree Cover Loss and Recent Fire Incident

Mozambique has been facing a significant challenge with tree cover loss over the past two decades. The country, which boasts an area of over 78 million hectares, has seen a substantial decrease in its tree cover. Notably, the tree cover extent, which once stood at nearly 29 million hectares, has experienced a net loss of over 4.30 million hectares, marking a 10.21% decline.

The primary driver of this deforestation has been shifting agriculture, accounting for the vast majority of tree cover loss. Urbanization, while contributing to a lesser extent, has also played a role in the reduction of tree cover. The impact of these activities has been profound, with the total gross emissions of CO2 equivalent reaching alarming levels.

In a recent development, Mozambique recorded a fire incident in the Sofala Province on September 19, 2024. This incident adds to the country's environmental challenges, highlighting the ongoing struggle with natural and human-induced disturbances to its forests.

The loss of tree cover not only has immediate environmental repercussions but also poses long-term threats to the biodiversity and climate regulation functions that these forests provide. As Mozambique continues to confront these issues, the need for sustainable land management practices becomes increasingly critical to preserve its remaining natural resources.
