Mali is facing an ongoing environmental challenge as recent data reveals a continued trend of tree cover loss across the country. Despite a tree cover extent of approximately 25,098 hectares, Mali has experienced a net loss of 256,113 hectares over the years, marking a 3.28% decrease in tree cover. The primary driver of this loss has been identified as shifting agriculture, which alone accounts for a significant portion of the deforestation.
The latest incident report from the Koulikoro Region of Mali, dated November 20, 2024, indicates a single fire alert, highlighting the persistent threats to Mali's natural resources. Over the years, the country has seen varying degrees of tree cover loss, with the highest recorded in 2013 at over 409 hectares. Although there have been gains in tree cover amounting to approximately 203,580 hectares, these have not been sufficient to offset the losses due to human activities and other disturbances.
