Zimbabwe Grapples with Deforestation: A Decade of Tree Cover Trends Revealed
Zimbabwe Grapples with Deforestation: A Decade of Tree Cover Trends Revealed

Zimbabwe has witnessed significant changes in its tree cover over the past two decades, with a net loss of 398,438 hectares, marking a 5.91% decrease in tree cover. The country's total area spans over 39 million hectares, with approximately 1.40 million hectares covered by trees. Analysis of historical data reveals that shifting agriculture and forestry are the primary drivers of tree cover loss, contributing to the majority of the deforestation.

Shifting agriculture alone is responsible for a substantial portion of the tree cover loss, with percentages ranging from 57.97% in 2001 to 59.65% in 2022. Forestry activities follow closely, accounting for 37.22% of the loss in 2001 and 35.56% in 2022. Wildfires and urbanization, while contributing to a lesser extent, still play a significant role in the changing landscape.

The latest incident from Mashonaland West Province on July 24, 2024, adds to the ongoing challenges faced by Zimbabwe in managing its natural resources. The single fire alert underscores the persistent threat of wildfires to the remaining tree cover. The cumulative effect of these factors over the years has led to a concerning trend of habitat loss and environmental degradation, which could have lasting impacts on the country's biodiversity and climate.
