Central African Republic Grapples with Tree Cover Loss and Recent Fire Incident

The Central African Republic (CAR) is currently facing significant environmental challenges, as evidenced by the latest data on tree cover loss and a recent fire incident. Over the past two decades, CAR has experienced a net loss in tree cover of approximately 1.32%, with a total loss of 1,210,279 hectares and a gain of just 482,449 hectares.

Shifting agriculture has been identified as the primary driver of this loss, accounting for a substantial portion of the tree cover reduction. The impact of this practice is evident, with the latest figures showing a staggering 98.50% of tree cover loss attributed to shifting agriculture in 2023 alone.

Despite the ongoing loss, the country's tree cover extent remains significant, with over 47 million hectares of trees still covering the land. However, the trend of deforestation is a cause for concern, as it not only affects biodiversity but also contributes to the country's carbon emissions.

Adding to the environmental strain, a fire incident was reported in the Haut-Mbomou region on January 26, 2025. Although the incident count was one, it serves as a reminder of the susceptibility of the nation's forests to wildfires, which can exacerbate tree cover loss and emissions.

The cumulative effect of these environmental issues poses a threat to the ecological balance and the livelihoods of communities dependent on forest resources. The situation in CAR highlights the need for sustainable land management practices to mitigate tree cover loss and protect the remaining forests for future generations.
