Zambia Confronts Alarming Tree Cover Loss; Single Fire Incident Reported

Zambia is grappling with significant environmental challenges as recent data reveals a troubling trend in tree cover loss. Over the past two decades, Zambia has experienced a net decrease in tree cover of approximately 7.31%, with a total loss of 3,640,266.87 hectares, only partially offset by a gain of 768,156.05 hectares. The predominant driver of this loss has been shifting agriculture, accounting for the vast majority of the deforestation. Urbanization, while less significant, has also contributed to the change in tree cover.

In addition to the loss of tree cover, Zambia has faced incidents of wildfires, which have further exacerbated the environmental impact. The latest report from the Western Province of Zambia indicates a single fire incident, underscoring the ongoing threat of wildfires to the region's tree cover and ecosystems.

The net change in tree cover reflects not only the loss and gain but also the disturbance and stability of the region's forests. With a stable tree cover of 34,159,461.78 hectares, efforts to mitigate loss and promote reforestation are critical in reversing the negative trend. The data presents a call to action for conservation and sustainable land management practices to protect Zambia's natural heritage for future generations.
