Chad Confronts Escalating Tree Cover Loss and Fire Incidents
Chad Confronts Escalating Tree Cover Loss and Fire Incidents

Chad has experienced a significant escalation in tree cover loss over the past two decades, with the latest incident reported in the Tandjilé region on January 30, 2025. The country, which boasts an area of approximately 127 million hectares, has a tree cover extent of around 410,000 hectares. However, this green asset has been under threat, with a net loss of over 843,000 hectares, marking a 7.83% decrease in tree cover.

Shifting agriculture has been identified as the primary driver of this loss, contributing to the vast majority of the tree cover decline. Notably, in 2023, shifting agriculture was responsible for nearly the entire tree cover loss, which amounted to over 11,000 hectares. Wildfires, while less significant in comparison, have also contributed to the emissions of carbon dioxide equivalents, with a notable increase in emissions in recent years.

The single fire incident recorded in Tandjilé is part of a broader trend of environmental challenges facing Chad. The cumulative effect of these incidents has led to a substantial environmental impact, with millions of metric tons of CO2 equivalent emissions released into the atmosphere due to tree cover loss since 2001.

The data underscores the need for urgent attention to the country's land use practices and the implementation of sustainable land management strategies to curb the loss of tree cover and mitigate the associated emissions.
