Iraq Confronts Environmental Challenge as Tree Cover Changes and Fire Incidents Rise

Iraq is facing a significant environmental challenge, as recent data indicates a shift in tree cover and the occurrence of fire incidents. The country, with an area of over 44.50 million hectares, has a relatively small tree cover extent of approximately 17,504 hectares. Over the years, Iraq has experienced fluctuations in tree cover loss and gains, with a net increase of 8,903 hectares, marking a 30.50% change in tree cover.

The latest incident report from Basra Governorate highlights a single fire alert, underscoring the ongoing risk of wildfires in the region. While the drivers behind tree cover loss, such as shifting agriculture, forestry, urbanization, and wildfires, have not been specified, the impact of these incidents is evident in the loss of tree cover and the associated emissions of greenhouse gases.

The historical data from 2001 to 2019 reveals a trend of varying tree cover loss, with the highest recorded loss in 2003 at approximately 19.60 hectares. Despite these losses, there have been significant gains, with a recorded tree cover gain of 9,456 hectares. The net positive change suggests a recovery and potential resilience in Iraq's tree cover, but the presence of fire incidents remains a concern for the environmental health of the country.

The environmental trajectory of Iraq will depend on the management of these natural resources and the mitigation of fire incidents that threaten to undermine the progress made in tree cover gains.
