Kenya Battles Rising Tree Cover Loss and Wildfires, Impacting Ecosystems

In Kenya, a concerning trend has emerged as data indicates a significant rise in tree cover loss over the years, with shifting agriculture being the predominant driver. The country, which boasts an area of over 58 million hectares, has a tree cover extent of approximately 3.30 million hectares. However, this green canopy is under threat, with a net loss of tree cover calculated at nearly 285,316 hectares, marking a 5.99% decrease.

The analysis of historical data reveals that shifting agriculture accounts for a substantial portion of the tree cover loss, followed by forestry activities, urbanization, and wildfires. In 2021 alone, shifting agriculture was responsible for over 88% of the tree cover loss, emphasizing the significant impact of agricultural practices on the environment.

Wildfires also pose a serious risk to Kenya's forests, with incidents such as the recent fire alert in Wajir County underscoring the vulnerability of these ecosystems to such disasters. The cumulative effect of these factors has led to a disturbing trend that not only affects biodiversity but also contributes to gross emissions of CO2, further exacerbating climate change concerns.

The situation calls for a broader discussion on sustainable land management and the implementation of measures that can mitigate the loss of tree cover. With the right strategies, Kenya can work towards reversing the negative trend and preserving its vital ecosystems for future generations.
