Ethiopia has faced a significant challenge with an escalating loss of tree cover over the past two decades. The latest incident in the Afar region, where a fire alert was registered on December 16, 2024, adds to the growing environmental concerns. Analysis of historical data reveals that the predominant driver of tree cover loss has been shifting agriculture, accounting for a substantial portion of the deforestation activities.
The country's tree cover extent, which spans over 12 million hectares, has experienced a net loss of approximately 738,330 hectares, marking a 3.61% decrease in tree cover. Urbanization, although a minor contributor compared to agriculture, has also played a role in the reduction of tree cover. Notably, there has been a fluctuation in the annual tree cover loss, with some years witnessing a sharp increase, indicative of the complex interplay of economic, social, and natural factors affecting Ethiopia's forests.
