Macedonia's Negotino Region Confronts Fresh Fire Incident Amid Ongoing Forest Cover Challenges

In the latest environmental update from Macedonia, the Municipality of Negotino has been hit by a fire incident, recorded on July 18, 2024. This event adds to the country's ongoing struggle with forest cover sustainability. Over the past two decades, Macedonia has experienced a net loss in tree cover of 11,724.42 hectares, which is a 1.34% decrease from its original extent. Notably, the forestry sector has been the predominant driver of tree cover loss, accounting for the vast majority of the 24,292.74 hectares lost, while gains have been modest at 12,568.32 hectares.

The trend of deforestation has had significant environmental impacts, with total gross emissions from tree cover loss amounting to millions of megagrams of CO2 equivalent. However, incidents such as the recent fire alert are relatively infrequent, with the latest data showing only one such event in the current year. The country's forested area, which stands at 781,684.42 hectares, remains under threat from various factors, but the data suggests a stable tree cover of 807,448.57 hectares, indicating some resilience in the face of these challenges.
