Angola Grapples with Environmental Impact as Tree Cover Loss Persists

Angola has been facing a significant challenge in maintaining its tree cover. Over the years, the country has seen a consistent pattern of tree cover loss, primarily driven by shifting agriculture. The most recent data indicates that Angola experienced a tree cover loss of 266,942 hectares in 2022, with shifting agriculture being responsible for the vast majority of this loss. This trend has been ongoing, with a staggering 2,982,940 hectares lost in 2021 and a total of 2,487,028 hectares in 2020.

The cumulative effect of these losses is substantial, with the net change in tree cover showing a 4.41% decrease. The stable tree cover area remains at 44,546,560 hectares, but the loss of 3,412,610 hectares, against a gain of only 1,224,125 hectares, indicates a troubling trajectory for the country's forest resources.

Wildfires have also played a role, although to a lesser extent than shifting agriculture. The latest incident reported on August 20, 2024, was a single fire alert in the Cuando Cubango Province, highlighting the ongoing threat of wildfires to the region's tree cover.

The environmental impact of these losses is significant, with the loss of tree cover contributing to habitat destruction, biodiversity loss, and the disruption of ecological balance. The data underscores the need for a broader discussion on sustainable land management practices to mitigate these losses and preserve Angola's natural heritage for future generations.
