Algeria has been facing a significant challenge with tree cover loss over the years, with the latest incident being a wildfire in Guelma Province on July 21, 2024. The country's tree cover extent spans approximately 1.22 million hectares, which is a small fraction of its total land area. Analysis of historical data reveals a worrying trend of increasing tree cover loss, primarily driven by shifting agriculture, which accounts for the majority of the loss. Wildfires also pose a recurring threat, contributing to both tree cover loss and CO2 emissions.
From 2001 to 2022, Algeria experienced a total tree cover loss of over 134,000 hectares, with shifting agriculture being responsible for nearly 73% of this loss. Wildfires, although less significant in comparison, still accounted for approximately 2.30% of the total loss during this period. The country has seen some gains in tree cover, but the net change remains a concern, with a net increase of around 25,000 hectares over the years, which translates to a change of 1.43%.
