Tanzania has recently recorded a new fire incident in the Katavi Region, highlighting the country's continued struggle with environmental challenges. Over the past two decades, Tanzania has experienced significant tree cover loss, primarily due to shifting agriculture, which accounts for the lion's share of the deforestation activities. The data reveals that shifting agriculture alone was responsible for over 90% of the tree cover loss each year, with other factors such as forestry, wildfires, and urbanization contributing to the remaining percentage.
The cumulative impact of these activities has led to a net loss of approximately 3.80 million hectares of tree cover, which equates to an 11.30% decrease from the original tree cover extent. This loss has not only affected the natural landscape but has also resulted in substantial CO2 emissions, further exacerbating the global climate crisis.
