Zambia's Tree Cover Faces Ongoing Threat from Shifting Agriculture and Wildfires

Zambia, a country with a land area of over 75 million hectares, has been experiencing significant tree cover loss over the past two decades. The country's tree cover extent, which spans approximately 24 million hectares, has been under persistent threat primarily due to shifting agriculture practices. Analysis of historical data reveals a worrying trend of increased tree cover loss, with shifting agriculture being the predominant driver, followed by urbanization and wildfires.

The impact of shifting agriculture on Zambia's tree cover is profound, accounting for the majority of the total tree cover loss. The data indicates that in 2022 alone, shifting agriculture was responsible for a staggering loss of over 178,000 hectares. Wildfires and urbanization also contribute to the decline, with wildfires causing a loss of around 135 hectares and urbanization accounting for approximately 54 hectares in the same year.

Over the years, the cumulative effect of these drivers has led to a net decrease in tree cover. The country has seen a net loss of over 2.80 million hectares, which is a 7.30% change from the original cover. This loss is not only a concern for the environment but also has implications for the country's carbon emissions, as the lost tree cover would have served as a carbon sink.

The latest incident from August 30, 2024, in the Western Province of Zambia, adds to the growing list of fire alerts in the country. While the number of incidents may vary from year to year, the consistent pattern of tree cover loss highlights the need for attention to the underlying causes to mitigate future losses.
