Central African Republic Grapples with Escalating Tree Cover Loss

The Central African Republic (CAR) is facing a significant challenge with the escalating loss of tree cover. Analysis of data over the past two decades reveals a troubling trend of increasing deforestation, primarily driven by shifting agriculture. The country, which spans over 62 million hectares, has seen a stable tree cover of approximately 53 million hectares. However, the net change in tree cover has been negative, with a loss of over 1.20 million hectares and only a modest gain of around 482,000 hectares.

The impact of shifting agriculture is evident, accounting for the vast majority of tree cover loss. For instance, in 2021 alone, shifting agriculture was responsible for over 65,000 hectares of lost tree cover. This trend has contributed to a net negative change in tree cover, with a 1.32% decrease, indicating a persistent and concerning decline in the country's forest resources.

The latest incident data from December 31, 2024, shows a fire alert in the Ombella-M'Poko region, highlighting the ongoing threats to the country's forests. While the count of incidents is relatively low, the cumulative effect of these losses over time poses a significant risk to the biodiversity and ecological balance of the region.

The Central African Republic's struggle with tree cover loss is a complex issue that requires attention and action to mitigate the adverse effects on the environment and local communities dependent on these forest resources for their livelihoods.
