Cameroon has experienced a significant tree cover loss over recent years, with the latest incident reported on December 7, 2024, in the East Region. The country, which boasts an area of over 46 million hectares, has seen a tree cover extent of approximately 31 million hectares. However, the trend in tree cover loss has been alarming. Analysis of historical data reveals that shifting agriculture is the predominant driver of this decline, contributing to the vast majority of the tree cover loss.
From 2001 to 2022, the total tree cover loss in Cameroon amounted to over 1.60 million hectares, which is approximately 5.40% of the country's total tree cover extent. The year 2014 marked the highest recorded loss, with over 181,000 hectares affected. Despite some gains in tree cover, the net change has been negative, with a net loss of around 626,000 hectares, indicating a decline of 1.71% in tree cover.
