Cameroon Grapples with Escalating Tree Cover Loss and Recent Fire Incident
Cameroon Grapples with Escalating Tree Cover Loss and Recent Fire Incident

Cameroon has been facing a significant challenge with its tree cover loss over the years. The Central African nation, known for its lush forests and diverse ecosystems, has experienced a net change in tree cover characterized by a loss of approximately 976,902 hectares and a gain of around 351,063 hectares, leading to a net loss of about 625,839 hectares. This equates to a net change of -1.71% in tree cover.

Shifting agriculture remains the predominant driver of this loss, accounting for the vast majority of the tree cover decline. For instance, in 2022 alone, shifting agriculture was responsible for over 142,351 hectares of tree cover loss. Forestry activities, although significantly less impactful in comparison, also contributed to the decline.

The latest incident in the North Region of Cameroon, recorded on December 12, 2024, with one fire alert, underscores the ongoing environmental challenges the country faces. These incidents not only threaten the biodiversity and habitats within these regions but also have broader implications for climate change and the livelihoods of local communities.

As the country continues to lose tree cover, the need for sustainable land management and conservation efforts becomes increasingly critical. The data over the years paints a picture of a nation struggling to balance agricultural development with environmental conservation, a challenge that is not unique to Cameroon but resonates globally.
