Cameroon Grapples with Escalating Tree Cover Loss and Latest Fire Incident

In a concerning environmental development, Cameroon has experienced a significant tree cover loss over the past two decades, with the latest incident data revealing a fire alert in the North Region on December 10, 2024. The country, which boasts an area of over 46.60 million hectares, has seen its tree cover extent, initially at 31.40 million hectares, diminish due to various factors.

Analysis of historical data indicates that shifting agriculture is the predominant driver of tree cover loss, accounting for a substantial percentage of the overall decrease. The impact of forestry activities, while present, is considerably less in comparison. Over the years, the cumulative effect of these drivers has led to a net change in tree cover that reflects a loss of approximately 976,901.79 hectares, with a slight gain of 351,62.95 hectares, resulting in a net negative change of -625,838.83 hectares, which translates to a -1.71% change in tree cover.

The environmental repercussions of this trend are significant, as tree cover plays a crucial role in carbon sequestration and maintaining biodiversity. The loss of tree cover not only impacts the local ecosystem but also contributes to global climate change concerns. The latest fire incident, although isolated, adds to the ongoing challenges faced by the country in preserving its natural resources.

As the international community continues to monitor and address environmental issues, the situation in Cameroon serves as a reminder of the persistent threats to forested regions worldwide. The data underscores the need for concerted efforts to mitigate tree cover loss and protect the remaining forested areas for future generations.
