Republic of Congo Battles Tree Cover Loss; Recent Fire Incident in Brazzaville
Republic of Congo Battles Tree Cover Loss; Recent Fire Incident in Brazzaville

The Republic of Congo has experienced a significant tree cover loss over the years, with shifting agriculture being the predominant driver. Analysis of historical data reveals a persistent decline in tree cover, which has resulted in a net loss of 331,681.56 hectares, accounting for a 1.38% decrease in the country's tree cover. Notably, the year 2016 marked the highest recorded loss, with over 114,303 hectares affected.

Urbanization and forestry activities have also contributed to this trend, albeit to a lesser extent. The latest incident, a fire alert in Brazzaville on July 21, 2024, underscores the ongoing challenges the country faces in preserving its forests. While the incident count is currently at one, it serves as a reminder of the potential for wildfires to exacerbate the situation further.

The Republic of Congo's forests are a critical part of the Congo Basin, which is the world's second-largest tropical rainforest. The loss of tree cover not only impacts biodiversity and ecosystems but also affects the livelihoods of local communities and the global climate.
