Madagascar is facing a significant environmental challenge with a marked increase in tree cover loss and recent fire incidents. Over the past two decades, the island nation has experienced a net loss of over 1 million hectares of tree cover, which equates to a 5.89% decrease in its tree cover extent. Shifting agriculture has been identified as the primary driver, responsible for the majority of the loss. In 2022 alone, shifting agriculture accounted for over 96% of the total tree cover loss. The impact of wildfires, while comparatively smaller, is also a concern, with the latest incident reported in the Melaky region on July 24, 2024. This trend of habitat destruction poses a serious threat to Madagascar's unique biodiversity and the livelihoods of its local communities.
