Ethiopia's Tree Cover Under Threat: A Comprehensive Analysis of Recent Losses
Ethiopia's Tree Cover Under Threat: A Comprehensive Analysis of Recent Losses

Ethiopia has experienced significant tree cover loss over the past two decades, with a net decrease of 3.61% in tree cover. This loss equates to approximately 1,141,912.66 hectares, overshadowing the gains made in tree cover, which stand at 403,581.93 hectares. The country's total area spans over 112 million hectares, with tree cover extending across roughly 12 million hectares.

The primary driver of tree cover loss in Ethiopia has been shifting agriculture, accounting for the vast majority of the decrease. Other factors contributing to the decline include urbanization, forestry practices, and wildfires. In the year 2023 alone, Ethiopia lost 36,262.92 hectares of tree cover, with shifting agriculture being the predominant cause.

Recent incidents have also highlighted the ongoing threat to Ethiopia's tree cover. On February 2, 2025, a fire alert was issued for the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples region, indicating the persistent risk of wildfires in the area.

The trend of tree cover loss in Ethiopia is a cause for concern, particularly in light of the essential role forests play in maintaining ecological balance, supporting biodiversity, and providing livelihoods for local communities. The net loss of tree cover, despite reforestation efforts, underscores the need for more effective strategies to manage and protect Ethiopia's natural resources.
