Central African Republic Grapples with Escalating Tree Cover Loss and Fire Incidents

The Central African Republic (CAR) is facing a significant challenge with an increasing trend in tree cover loss, primarily due to shifting agriculture. Over the past two decades, the country has seen a net decrease in tree cover of approximately 1.32%, with a total loss of over 1.21 million hectares. This loss is juxtaposed against a smaller gain of around 482,000 hectares, pointing to a troubling trajectory for the nation's forest health.

In 2021 alone, the CAR experienced the highest recorded tree cover loss of over 67,000 hectares, with shifting agriculture being the predominant driver. This pattern of land use has not only reduced the tree cover but has also led to significant emissions, with over 26 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent released in 2022 due to tree cover loss.

Adding to the environmental strain, the latest fire incident reported on December 23, 2024, in the Haute-Kotto region, underscores the ongoing challenges the country faces in managing its natural resources. Although the incident count is currently at one, the impact of such fires can contribute to further tree cover loss and habitat destruction.

The data highlights the need for concerted efforts to address the root causes of deforestation and to implement sustainable land management practices. The CAR's rich biodiversity and the well-being of its communities depend on the health of its forests, which are currently under threat from human activities and natural disturbances.
